Construct 'n Learn Smart Workbench

Product Website

As lead developer on the Construct 'n Learn Smart Workbench mobile app, I took charge of gameplay programming and technical direction of the team. The app has integrated a mix of 2D and 3D asset styles which were optimized for mobile device performance. As the Smart Workbench is a connected device toy, the app uses Bluetooth LE to communicate to toy hardware and supplement physical interactions with digital animations.

This was the first project in which I lead a team of more than 4 people to a final product for a major client.

There were a couple things I enjoyed most about this project: technically directing the art pipeline of the project, and integrating the RFID tagged hardware pieces to be recognized by the app. One major challenge to account for the chaotic nature of child play in a real environment. This taught me quickly that there’s both immense value in blind user testing, and fun. Please get in touch if you’d like to talk about any of the systems built for this connected toy app, or see any code examples!
